Collingwood skaters performing 'greatest hits' to celebrate 70th

Collingwood Skating Club annual carnival at Eddie Bush Memorial Arena April 1 at 1 p.m.

The Collingwood Skating Club is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a performance of its greatest hits over the years.

Since 1953, local ice skaters have been putting on an annual carnival for audiences in Collingwood featuring group and individual performances by members of the Collingwood Skating Club and high-profile guest skaters from the Canadian figure skating world.

The show this year is called Collingwood Skating Club's Greatest Hits, which will include music and themes from the last 70 years of shows, the club said in a news release.

"Our skaters and volunteers have been working hard to put together a show that truly honours the club's long history and its bright future," said the club's president, Julia Sheffield.

"We are excited to continue the tradition of sharing our final performances of the season with Collingwood audiences."

Canadian national champion and Olympian Gabrielle Daleman will be skating in the show as a special guest.

The club is also excited to have performances by pre-novice champions Siyul Bella Back and Gavin Mahoney, and junior national dance team Dana Sabatini-Speciale and Nicholas Buelow.

They'll be sharing the ice with club members who range in age from three to 17 years old, including beginners to advanced skaters.

Local radio personality and musician John Eaton will be the master of ceremonies this year.

“We'll be bringing back themes like ballet, circus, TV and films, rock n' roll, and a bit of fantasy for our show,” said Sheffield.

Collingwood Skating Club's Greatest Hits takes to the ice at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena on April 1 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, and $5 for kids and seniors.
