Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Rick Byers has a new role in the provincial government.

On March 28, Premier Doug Ford announced a number of changes to his team of parliamentary assistants.

Byers, in his first term as MPP, will now serve as Parliamentary Assistant to President of the Treasury Board Caroline Mulroney. He had previously served as Parliamentary Assistant to Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy.

“I enjoyed my role as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance since June 2022. It was great to be involved with the 2023 and 2024 budgets, as well as other policy initiatives,” Byers said in an email to CollingwoodToday. “I am also excited about the opportunity to work with Minister Mulroney as PA to the President of the Treasury Board, and to contribute to the government's strong agenda in that new role.”

Ontario’s Treasury Board has a number of responsibilities including:

  • Plan expenditure management and controllership through the Treasury Board, including support and due diligence for decision-making related to capital.
  • Oversee labour relations between the government and the Ontario Public Service and broader public sector.
  • Oversee corporate policy and agency governance to support more accountability, openness and modernization.
  • Perform internal audit functions.
  • Perform internal Human Resources policy functions.

In a news release, Ford said the parliamentary assistants play a key role in implementing the government’s agenda.

“By supporting ministers with legislative and committee responsibilities or taking on important projects with dedicated leadership, parliamentary assistants play a critical role in delivering on our plan to rebuild Ontario’s economy,” said Premier Ford. “With today’s announcement, I’m thrilled to recognize and showcase our team’s in-depth experience, which will help us continue to get it done for the people of Ontario.”
