Counterfeit bills reach Midland, Wasaga, Collingwood businesses

Local OPP reported fake $50s were circulating in Collingwood earlier this week, now spotted in Midland

After a report from Collingwood OPP of counterfeit $50 bills found by local retailers earlier this week, the Southern Georgian Bay OPP are now warning Midland businesses of the same phoney money.

OPP fielded "several calls" this week from Midland area retailers who had what police confirmed were counterfeit $50 bills (Canadian currency).

Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP had five reports of counterfeit $50 bills used at local retailers in two days at the beginning of this week.

According to police, people are using the fake money to make in-store purchases.

In both Midland and Collingwood, the OPP investigation into the incidence is still ongoing, and police are warning retailers in both areas to be aware and read up on checking and reporting suspected counterfeit money.

OPP suggest referring to the Bank of Canada website for counterfeit prevention tips.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
