OLB swimmers propel to podium at regionals, qualify for OFSAA

The swim team from Collingwood's Catholic high school finished third at a regional meet this week, setting the athletes up with spots at the provincial championships in March.

The swim team from Collingwood's catholic high school finished third at a regional meet this week, setting the athletes up with spots at the provincial championships in March. 

Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School sent 20 swimmers to the Georgian Bay Secondary Sports association swim meet in Barrie on Tuesday, Dec. 12, where the Collingwood team placed third overall. 

The boys' open team, including Liam Paterson, Spencer Adlington, Anderson Hulshof, Christian Ferreria, and Alex Meguierian won their event. 

Sixteen of the OLB swim team athletes qualified for spots at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association (OFSAA) championships in Toronto, March 4-6. 

Swim team coach Katy Funston sent in the following highlights from the Dec. 12 regional meet in Barrie:

  • Jack Wessinger and Reese Wessinger made it to OFSAA in their his events, including an impressive win in the 50 fly and 100 IM.
  • Spencer Adlington continues to dominate in all of his events including a first and PB in 100 IM and in 100M breaststroke, as did Sydney Kemp, Anderson Hulshof, Liam Paterson and Christian Ferriera.
  • The thrilling win by junior boy’s relay with Gabe Parker competing in the 200 IM relay for the first time and helping his team win first along with Jack Wessinger, Julian Valdez and Ethan Does.
  • Senior boys relay too had a thrilling victory with members Marshall Kerr, Jack Wessinger, Andrew Den Bok and Ethan Does.
  • Reese Wessinger, Maea Knights, Sydney Kemp and Olive Ben Ghali and Sunny Valdez combined to have OFSAA times for their relays. Sunny Valdez and Olive Ben Ghali stepped into an open relay to help the team achieve an OFSAA spot.
  • Olive Ben Ghali took off 15 secs in her 100 IM and qualified for OFSAA as did Marshall Kerr in his 100 IM and 100 Free.
  • Alex Mageurian had a personal best in his 100 back and Isaac Morris took off more time on his events.
  • Great results for Mia Baden, Sophia Sangiuliano and Amelia Ellis in the 200 free relay.
