The Collingwood-based masters swim team, currently the defending provincial champions, hosted a meet in home waters last weekend, inviting teams from Owen Sound, Muskok and Aurora.

The Georgian Bay Squall hosted an invitational masters swim meet at Centennial Aquatic Centre in Collingwood on the Dec. 16/17 weekend, which is a first for the region.

The youth swim team, the Collingwood Clippers, helped support the meet with officiating.

The regional first was also a personal first  for 17 members of the Georgian Bay Squall's 42-member team who were competing for the first time.

Competitors ranged in age from 22 to 79 years old, and they raced in events such as 50-metre sprints, 100-metre swims, some 200-metre distances, individual medley and a relay, according to a news release issued by the Georgian Bay Squall.

"Numerous best times and quality seasonal swims were had by all, preparing the squad for bigger meets such as provincials and nationals coming up in 2024," states the release. "With the breadth of ages and quality of swimmers on the team, the prospect of defending their provincial championship is well within reach."

The Georgian Bay Squall was founded in 2021 to welcome adult swimmers of various abilities.
