The new Georgian Bay Squall Masters Swim Team brought 37 of its members to the 2023 Ontario Provincial Masters Swimming Championships this past weekend, where 39 Masters Clubs competed from across the province.

There were 432 competitors on 39 teams ranging in age from 19 to 99 years and the GB Squall prevailed with the top women’s field, second place men’s field and were crowned as overall team champions, finishing over 500 points ahead of the second-place club.

Highlights of the weekend were the energy that the Squall brought to the forum of the Etobicoke Olympium.

Decked in their telltale turquoise shirts, the team brought new cheers and was a visible presence encouraging team members at the side of the pool finishing distance events.

Too many medals and team records were won and broken to mention here but suffice to say, plenty of hardware was brought home to Collingwood.

The Squall’s most mature swimmer, Gillian Mayne (aged 79) rocked the field, winning three events and collaborating on relay teams to amazing finishes.

One of the club’s youngest swimmers, Carly Ross (aged 29), came home with five individual gold medals.

All told, it was a team to be reckoned with and they performed beyond expectations.

Head coach Nancy Black was thrilled with the result, hoping for maybe a top 5 team finish and coming up on top, a true testimonial to her hard work and the efforts of all the Squall’s dedicated coaches.
