CollingwoodToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via the website. Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter was sent in response to a previous letter suggesting the government should not be building long-term-care homes.

Building long-term care facilities is required to free up beds in acute care hospitals.

People needing long-term care should not be left in an institution that is not designed to allow these folks to have a better quality of life.

Also using an acute care bed to house these folks is not an appropriate use of taxpayers' money.

It is known that beds in long-term care facilities are cheaper to operate than beds in an acute care facility.

It is also known that there will be an increase in the number of people who will require this type of service.

This is not the time to worry about "not in my backyard" syndrome.
