The region's health unit confirmed a new case of COVID-19 in a Collingwood resident.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported the case yesterday, and it was the only new case confirmed in the region on Aug. 20.

Collingwood has not had a lab-confirmed case of the coronavirus since July 20, and prior to that the last case was reported on May 19.

The latest case is a woman in her 50s. She is self-isolating at home.

The health unit confirmed another four cases in Simcoe County today, but did not specify which municipality each case was from. That information won't be available until Monday.

On August 11, the Grey Bruce Health Unit confirmed a new COVID case in The Blue Mountains. There was another case in The Blue Mountains reported on Aug. 7, but prior to that there had not been a confirmed case since May 13.

The last cases confirmed in Wasaga Beach and Clearview were reported on June 19 and July 27 respectively.

Back-to-school plans are coming to light each day from both the provincial government and area school boards. Simcoe County District School Board was the latest to announce a staggered start for students returning to in-class lessons in September.

Earlier this week, Dr. Charles Gardner, the Simcoe-Muskoka region medical officer of health, was critical of the provincial government for not releasing an outbreak management plan for school settings. Premier Doug Ford promised yesterday the plan would be announced today.

Collingwood's Central Park Arena is the latest public facility in town to reopen. Ice rentals resumed on Monday with restrictions in place.
