The Town of The Blue Mountains Fire Department is reminding the public of the importance of checking and testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are in proper working condition.
Over the past holiday season, The Blue Mountains Fire Department responded to a call regarding non-working and inadequate smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Through the call-for-service, Fire Inspectors laid five charges. In June, two guilty pleas were registered in Provincial Offences Court, and three additional charges were stayed. The two guilty plea monetary penalties were as follows:
- Count #1 – Failure to maintain smoke alarms = $2500.00 and $625.00 surcharge plus court costs
- Count #2 – Failure to maintain carbon monoxide alarms = $2500.00 and $625.00 surcharge plus court costs
Three other charges have been stayed and can be reviewed if the defendant commits the same or similar offences within the next year.
Through the example provided above, The Blue Mountains Fire Department would like to remind residents that the Fire Department offers complimentary fire safety inspections for all homes and residences in the Town. The safety inspections help identify and correct any safety concerns related to fire safety and ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in proper working order.
