The Grey Bruce Health Unit (GBHU) is reporting three new cases of COVID-19 today – two cases in Grey Highlands and one in South Bruce.

“The main transmission source remains to be private gatherings,” said Dr. Ian Arra, medical officer of health for GBHU. “People either get fatigued or lower their guard and they end up acquiring it and passing it innocently to their family and friends.”

The health unit has reported a total of 703 cases in the region to date, and notes there are 12 active cases in both counties combined.

The health unit has had two deaths related to COVID-19, and there is currently one individual being hospitalized.

Active cases in Grey County are currently located in Owen Sound (6), Grey Highlands (2) and Hanover (1).

The health unit is currently tracking 31 high-risk contacts associated with active cases.

Of GBHU’s 703 cumulative cases, 689 cases have recovered.

Resolved COVID-19 cases in Grey County include: Owen Sound (109); Southgate (90); Grey Highlands (68); West Grey (49); Blue Mountains (44); Hanover (44); Meaford (23); Georgian Bluffs (7); Chatsworth (9).

Beginning today, the GBHU region has moved into the green-prevent zone of the province’s COVID-19 response framework.

Vaccination plans for the week of March 1 will focus on providing the second dose for all long-term care residents, as well as continued administration of the first dose to first responders, community health care workers in high-risk categories, community needle exchange partners and residents over the age of 80.

Residents over the age of 80 can expect to receive a phone call from a primary care provider who will assist them in booking an appointment time. The health unit has asked the public not to call the health unit at this time.

“We will ensure optimal communication to everybody and throughout all channels,” Arra said. “No one will be left out.  We are working closely to ensure all our priority populations are serviced.”

To-date GBHU has currently administered 7,484 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. For additional information on the GBHU vaccination plan, visit the GBHU website.

“Remember the three W's - wash hands frequently, watch distance (ideally six feet), and wear face-covering correctly - it's really what kept us safe, and it is needed to carry us until there are enough vaccines in the arms. Don't let your guard down yet,” Arra added.
