With no in-person fundraising events for the past two years, the Clarksburg Village Association has struggled to raise the funds required to keep downtown Clarksburg at its finest.
“We rely heavily on community events to generate revenue for our association,” said Sarah Filion, president of the Clarksburg Village Association. “Two years with no events has been detrimental to us. Due to COVID-19, we also held back on our membership drive, which was another significant financial loss for our organization.”
Filion recently wrote to the Town of The Blue Mountains (TBM) council on the advice of the town’s Economic Development Advisory Committee asking for funding assistance for the association in the amount of $5,000, which council approved at a meeting held on Monday afternoon.
“Our memberships cover the cost of insurance and promotion, however this $5,000 will be directed toward the physical enhancement of Clarksburg to reflect the quality of our business community,” Filion wrote, adding that the association is run on a volunteer-membership basis and does not charge a mandatory levy.
Filion outlined plans to add colour and creative installations to the downtown area, noting that many local artists will be donating their time and talents, and the funding from the town will be used for materials.
“We are looking to add light fixtures to illuminate the original artwork on our hydro poles, along with basic simplicities such as bike racks and seating areas to make anyone coming to Clarksburg feel welcome,” she said.
