Members of the Huronia West detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a 22-year-old driver with impaired operation and stunt driving as a result of a traffic stop in Springwater Township.

On March 29, just after 9:30 p.m., a Huronia West OPP officer was conducting enforcement in the area of Highway 26 and Atkinson Road in Springwater Township in response to community complaints of speeding.

The officer observed a vehicle westbound on Highway 26, travelling at a speed of 145 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The officer conducted a traffic stop and was led into an impaired operation investigation.

Skyler Bailey, 22, from Wasaga Beach has been charged with operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs), operation while impaired (blood alcohol concentration 80-plus) and stunt driving in relation to excessive speed.

The vehicle was impounded for 14 days as a result of the charge of stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood in April to answer to the charges.

Huronia West OPP detachment commander, Insp. Leah Gilfoy, would like to reiterate that “driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is never acceptable and will not be tolerated.

“Driving 65 km/h over the speed limit is an expensive venture that not only costs your pocketbook in fines, impound charges and insurance premiums but could also cost you your freedom, your life or the life of someone else. Be responsible. If you plan on consuming drugs or alcohol, don’t drive. Further, thank you to our frontline police officers on patrol for proactively enforcing our laws and getting this driver, and others, off our streets before someone gets injured. Well done. Community safety is our commitment.”
