Two reports of people sleeping in cars end with impaired charges

Area Ontario Provincial Police arrested two drivers and issued impaired driving charges in Meaford this weekend. 

Officers from Grey Bruce OPP responded to a report of a driver asleep in a parked vehicle on Sykes Street on Dec. 9 at 8:55 p.m. Police arrested the 38-year-old Owen Sound man and charged him with operation while impaired, two counts of possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a schedule one substance (opioid), possession of a schedule three substance, and failure to comply with a release order. 

The accused was released from police custody and will have to appear in court in Owen Sound on Dec. 28. 

The next day, Dec. 10, at 2:44 p.m. police received another report of a person sleeping in their vehicle on Nelson Street in Meaford. According to a news release, the vehicle was gone when police arrived, so OPP went to the vehicle owner's address. 

"While they were speaking to the driver, the driver was displaying signs of impairment," states the news release from OPP. 

As a result, police charged a 70-year-old from Meaford with operation while impaired. 

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 4.
