A Barrie youth charged in a crash in which a local teenager was killed is serving a sentence of 18 months probation.

The youth, whose name cannot be released under provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was also handed a three-year driving prohibition.

Paige Ferreira, 17, died from her injuries on Jan. 29, 2020, when the vehicle in which she was a passenger flipped and rolled on Georgian Drive. She was pronounced dead at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre that night.

The driver, who was 17 at the time and suffered minor injuries in the crash, was subsequently charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

The youth pleaded guilty and received 18 months probation and as well as the three-year driving prohibition on May 20.

Charges relating to the other driver involved in the crash were withdrawn Oct. 6, 2020.

nA friend of the Ferreira family said she's concerned about what she says appears to be an increase in risky driving behaviour in Barrie and she was disappointed in the penalty.

“There’s already been a lot of speeding and reckless driving,” Megan Sampson told BarrieToday. “When you know someone who lost their life to it, it’s frustrating.

“It doesn’t feel that safe anymore. And, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like there’s much consequences.”
