The Town of The Blue Mountains Fire Department have announced successful convictions against a homeowner related to non-working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and the department is using the occasion as a reminder for everyone to check their own alarms.

The person charged with the offences pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court to failure to maintain smoke alarms and failure to maintain carbon monoxide alarms, each came with a $2,500 fine plus $625 court surcharge.

According to a news release from the Town of The Blue Mountains, the fire department issued the charges following a call over the Christmas holidays regarding non-working and inadequate smoke alarms.

Fire inspectors laid five charges.

"Three other charges have been stayed and can be reviewed if the defendant commits the same or similar offences within the next year," states the news release.

The Blue Mountains Fire Department is reminding residents that fire safety inspections are also available for free for all homes and residences in the town.

The safety inspections will identify fire safety concerns and ensure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order.
