A provincial arms-length investigations unit is looking into the death of a 39-year-old woman in Collingwood this morning.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Collingwood detachment, officers were called to a Collingwood address early on Dec. 22 where a woman had suffered injuries.

Local OPP confirmed the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, so police will offer no further comment on the matter.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reported police were called to a home in the Mariner's Way subdivision at 12:15 a.m. on Dec. 22.

The preliminary information relayed by the SIU is that officers observed, through a window, a woman harming herself.

"The officers immediately entered the residence and applied life-saving measures," states a news release from the SIU. "The woman was pronounced dead at the scene."

The SIU noted all details are preliminary at this time.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case, and anyone with information about the investigation, including video or photos is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online here.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. Their mandate is invoked when someone dies or is injured while police are at the scene or while a person is in custody, and through investigation determine if the injury or death was caused by police action.
