Members from the Huronia West detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have removed a habitual illegal driver from the roadway as a result of a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot check.

In the early morning hours of May 30, officers were conducting a RIDE spot check in the Township of Clearview. Shortly after midnight, a vehicle approached the spot check and officers were led into an impaired operation investigation.

Further investigation revealed the driver initially provided a false name. Once the correct identity of the driver was confirmed, it was determined the driver was under two current driving disqualifications — one for an impaired driving conviction and one for a disqualified driving conviction. This driver was also currently on charges for impaired driving and taking a motor vehicle without consent.

As a result of the investigation a 30-year-old male from Feversham was charged with obstructing a peace officer and operation while prohibited.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood in July to answer to the charges.

As part of our commitment to taking alcohol/drugs-impaired drivers off our roads, Huronia West OPP would like to remind motorists that RIDE spot checks are conducted all year round. No amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 911 to report it.
