OPP charge Collingwood man for impersonating police officer, carrying gun

A 22-year-old man was charged with several offences, including uttering death threats

Members of the Collingwood and Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in connection to an incident of police impersonation in Collingwood.

On March 3, 2022, the Collingwood and Blue Mountains OPP commenced an investigation after receiving a report of a male making threats in Collingwood. Police learned that the male had identified himself as a police officer and was in possession of a firearm.

The individual was located and arrested without incident. Officers seized an imitation firearm and fraudulent police identification.

As a result of the investigation, a 22-year-old male of Collingwood, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Utter Threats to Cause Death
  • Impersonate a Peace Officer
  • Carry Concealed Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Breach of an Undertaking
  • Breach of Probation

The name of the accused is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim of the threats. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood, at a future date.

You can also request to see the officer's badge and identification. Look for inconsistencies in the officer's uniform. Uniform police officers wear insignia related to their police service and have strict dress code standards. Some officers and off-duty officers do not wear uniforms, but they should be able to provide you with the name of their service and detachment, badge number and rank without hesitation, and produce their badge and identification.
