No suspects yet in Collingwood Terminals break-in: OPP

‘I know it might make for a great photo op on your phone or something you want to do, but you have to realize that there are a lot of dangers in that building, and a lot of ways to get injured,’ says OPP officer

Reports of a break-in at the Collingwood Grain Terminals had police and their canine unit at the site for most of Tuesday afternoon.

“We had reports of possibly some parties observed on the roof of the establishment,” Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP Const. Martin Hachey told CollingwoodToday.

“We haven’t located anyone so far.”

Hachey said the emergency response unit and the canine unit were on site searching the area for suspects throughout the afternoon, and he noted OPP had cleared the scene as of 5 p.m.

“They may have left prior to our arrival,” he said.

He offered a word of warning to thrill seekers who may think it’s a good idea to break into the Collingwood landmark.

“I know it might make for a great photo op on your phone or something you want to do, but you have to realize that there are a lot of dangers in that building, and a lot of ways to get injured,” he said.

Hachey said anyone caught in or on the building could face trespassing or break-and-enter charges.

“Stay away from the building. It could mean criminal charges,” he said.

In a news release put out by the town’s communications manager, Christa Carter, the town acknowledged it was aware of the activity.

“We are aware of an illegal entry into the Grain Terminals that created a high police presence around this iconic structure. Town staff are supporting the OPP to address this very unfortunate and disappointing circumstance,” Carter said in the release.

“We are not aware of a public safety issue at this time. We thank the OPP for their continued efforts to resolve this issue.”
