Incident at Wasaga motel leads to assault charges

The accused was allegedly seen punching the victim repeatedly as the victim screamed for help, police say

WASAGA BEACH – On July 19, 2020, at 3:49 a.m., members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an assault in progress at a motel on River Road West, Wasaga Beach. Multiple witnesses stated a male was repeatedly punching another male who was screaming for help, outside of a motel room. 

Officers attended the area and located the involved parties. Investigation at the scene led police to arrest and charge one male for multiple Criminal Code offences. 

As a result of the investigation, Johnathan Penny, 28 years of age, of Wasaga Beach, Ontario, was arrested and charged with:   

  • CC 145(5)(a) - Failure to comply with release order  
  • CC 264.1(1)(a) - Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm 
  • CC 266 - Assault
  • CC 348(1)(b) - Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence  
  • CC 430(1)(a) - Mischief - destroys or damages property  

The accused was held for a bail hearing by video on July 20, 2020.
