Driver enters RIDE impaired, with open alcohol, police say

Caledon man, 37, arrested today, faces several charges

Members of the Collingwood and Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested an individual and laid charges in an impaired driving investigation stemming from a RIDE conducted near Blue Mountain Village in the Town of the Blue Mountains.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday Jan. 20 while conducting a RIDE check, officers stopped a motor vehicle and observed open alcohol in the centre console and driver side door. A roadside test was conducted with the driver using an approved screening device resulting in a fail. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to Collingwood detachment for a breath test.

A 37 year-old male from Caledon was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused has been served a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension, the vehicle has been impounded for seven days and he will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood at a future date.

Members of the Collingwood and Blue Mountains Detachment will continue to proactively conduct RIDE spot checks all year around looking for drivers who operate any vehicle or conveyance while impaired. If you suspect someone of driving while impaired, call the OPP 1-888-310-1122 or dial 911 to report it.
