Collingwood woman among list of drivers charged in Wasaga Beach this weekend

Local OPP marine units inspected 65 vessels between Wasaga and Thornbury and issued 24 charges

WASAGA BEACH –The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was kept busy over the weekend of Aug. 13-15, 2021, with numerous impaired driving arrests and proactive enforcement.

Friday, Aug.13, 2021
At approximately 8:36 p.m., officers received a tip of two vehicles operated by suspected impaired drivers leaving a local establishment in Wasaga Beach. Both vehicles were located a short time later and an impaired investigation began. One of the drivers was arrested on scene and the other registered an "ALERT" on a roadside screening device resulting in a three-day licence suspension.

As a result, a 33-year-old female from Clearview Township, has been charged with: 

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand 
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Cocaine  

Her driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle seized for seven days.

Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021
Shortly after midnight, an officer was travelling on River Road West and noted a vehicle travelling 90km/h in a 50km/h posted zone. The officer entered into a stunt driving investigation and, while doing so, noted the driver showing signs of impairment. The driver was transported back to the Huronia West Detachment for further tests. Breath results registered almost four times the legal limit. 

As a result, a 28-year-old man from Renfrew, has been charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and drugs 
  • Operation while impaired - BAC above zero
  • Race a motor vehicle - excessive speed

His driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for 14 days.

Only minutes after the stunt driving investigation, officers received a call for a two-vehicle collision on County Road 9 in the area of New Lowell in Clearview Township. Officers attended and noted that one of the drivers was displaying signs of impairment. He was subsequently transported back to the Huronia West Detachment for further tests. Breath results registered almost three times the legal limit.

As a result, a 36-year-old man from Clearview Township, has been charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and drugs 
  • Operation while impaired - BAC above zero 
  • Dangerous operation

His licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle seized for seven days.

At approximately 8:46 p.m., officers received a complaint from a concerned citizen regarding youths who were believed to be intoxicated in a parking lot of a local establishment. Upon police arrival, it was determined the youths were being supplied alcohol by the suspect. During the investigation, a male driver was arrested for impaired operation.

As a result, a 32-year-old man from Richmond Hill, has been charged with: 

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand 
  • Supplying liquor to person appearing under 19

His licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle seized for seven days.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers noted a vehicle parked in the middle of the Huronia West Detachment parking lot and noted a woman in the driver's seat who appeared to be sleeping.

As a result of the investigation, a 36-year-old woman from Collingwood, has been charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and drugs 
  • Operation while impaired - BAC above zero

Her licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle seized for seven days.

Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021
At approximately 11 p.m., officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle on County Road 9 in Clearview Township. Upon attending, a male was located and appeared to be sleeping in the driver's seat. During the investigation, the driver was showing signs of impairment.

As a result, a 75-year-old man from Clearview Township, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and drugs 
  • Operation while impaired - BAC above zero 
  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and drugs

His licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle seized for seven days.

Traffic Enforcement
In between calls for service, officers remained vigilant and proactive in Wasaga Beach, Clearview Township and Springwater Township, with various types of enforcement.

Charges laid as follows: 

  • Speeding - 115 
  • Distracted driving - 4 
  • Seatbelt - 2 
  • Racing - 3 
  • Moving violations - 12 
  • Commercial vehicles - 9 
  • Other HTA - 42 
  • Liquor violations - 14 
  • Insurance violations - 9

Marine
The joint Huronia West/Collingwood OPP Marine Unit was also kept busy on the water with various types of calls for service, including missing persons and disabled vessels requiring assistance.

During proactive patrols between Wasaga Beach and Thornbury, 65 vessels were inspected for compliance and multiple warnings were given for various minor equipment violations.

Twenty-four (24) marine-related charges were laid for various offences, including failing to have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), Excessive speed on the Nottawasaga River, open liquor and possessing a vessel within a restricted area.

The OPP is committed to public safety and encourages anyone who suspects an impaired driver to call 9-1-1 immediately. The joint Huronia West/Collingwood OPP Marine Unit will continue to commit to safety on our waterways throughout the remainder of the season through education, personal relations, high visibility and enforcement.
