Accused now charged with second degree murder in senior's purse-snatching death

Officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested Caleb Burgler, 30 years old, of Collingwood as a result of an ongoing investigation.

The accused is charged with second degree murder as well as robbery with violence and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.

On Sept. 14, 2019 at approximately 4 p.m., an elderly woman was walking on Market Lane when she was assaulted and knocked to the ground by an unknown suspect. The suspect proceeded to steal the victim's purse and left the area. As a result, the elderly victim suffered life-threatening injuries and has succumbed to her injuries. 

The investigation is being conducted by the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP Crime Unit with the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) under the direction of Detective Inspector Chris Landry of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
