NEWS RELEASE
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE
*************************
Officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have investigated 23 theft of bicycles so far this year and wish to remind the public of a few good tips on preventing bicycle theft.

The majority of the thefts, 17 to be exact, took place from June to July and occurred at different locations, some were stolen from garages, front porches, from the back of a pickup truck and from private property as well as businesses.

In the majority of those thefts the bike was not locked which leads us to the #1 tip for crime prevention; lock your bike. Even if you are going inside a store for a few minutes or you have put it in a location that is out of sight, it only takes a few seconds to steal an unlocked bike.

For tips on locking your bike, see the below link via the OPP YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vdlj5xpffY

As well take some photos of your bike, record the serial number which you can then provide to police should your bicycle be stolen. The photos can then be linked to the theft report to assist in identifying the bike should it be recovered.

This leads to the fact that if your bike is stolen, please report it to police by either calling 1-888-310-1122 or you can do so via Citizen Self Reporting at www.opp.ca .
