Titans U16 team wins club's first provincial medals

The rugby team, which trains in Collingwood, went undefeated in the regular season and took their winning streak to the Ontario Junior Cup this month

A local rugby team achieved a club first by winning the bronze medal game at the Ontario Junior Cup after an undefeated regular season.

The Georgian Bay Titans rugby club's U16 team finished third in the provincial tournament, which took place Aug. 20 in Markham, and included the top eight U16 teams in the province.

The Titans club trains in Collingwood at Harbourview Park twice a week, but the 29 players on the team come from across the region from Collingwood and Thornbury to Stayner, Wasaga Beach, Alliston and Angus. Led by coaches Chris Allen and Mark Henderson, general manager Geoff Tripp, and club president Todd Hammond the team trains from early May to the end of their season - August if it includes matches at the Ontario Junior Cup tournament.

This year at the cup, the Titans won their first match, lost their second, but won the third to get the bronze medal, making it the first time a Titans team has medalled at the provincial championship.

Since Rugby Ontario doesn't separate divisions by the club's city centre or population, the Titans won matches against teams from larger centres such as Aurora, Oakville and Kingston.

Tripp said the team went undefeated 10-0 for the regular season and compiled "an impressive 315 points while allowing just 97 points in those 10 matches."

Another highlight of the year for the U16 team was a match against Harrogate Rugby Union Football Club a touring side from England (north of Leeds).

The Georgian Bay Titans rugby club offers teams from U6 to adult. For more information, visit the club's website here.
