Residents invited to sweat lodge ceremonies next week

The Town of Collingwood invites community members and visitors to experience a traditional Sweat Lodge, one of the oldest Indigenous ceremonies in North America, taking place at the Awen’ Gathering Place from May 9 to 14.

Sweat Lodge, a.k.a the Madoodiswan, has been practised and preserved by many Indigenous nations for thousands of years. It will be led by Indigenous Traditional Healer and Oshkabewis (Helper) James Carpenter.

"The sweat lodge represents the womb of Mother Earth," reads the releases issued by the town. "In this ancient ceremony, there is an opportunity for individuals to build their spirit connection, cleanse their physical beings, and seek guidance from ancestors."

"There are many reasons to attend a sweat lodge ceremony," the release continues. "Those who participate are often on their own individual personal healing journeys, and at times seeking clarity for their path of life."

Friday, May 12  2 – 4:00 p.m. & 6 – 8:00 p.m. All welcome
Saturday, May 13  2 – 4:00 p.m. & 6 – 8:00 p.m.   All welcome
Sunday, May 14  2 – 4:00 p.m. All welcome

Two ceremonies will be focused on collective learning and experience-sharing among first-time participants. 

Another two ceremonies have been designated for members of the Indigenous community to honour their cultural practices.

The remaining times are open to all. 

The Sweat Lodge ceremonies are free to attend. Attendees are welcome to join for the duration they feel appropriate. Space is limited, and pre-registration is recommended.
