An upcoming volunteer fair during National Volunteer Week highlights the local need for people to help non-profit and charity organizations in the community.

Organized by a group of area organizations, including the Collingwood Public Library, the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, Community Connections, E3 Community Services, and the South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre, the volunteer fair aims to drum up volunteers for the local services and groups.

The idea for the fair is to connect people who are looking for opportunities to volunteer with the organizations looking for volunteers.

Sadie Nixon, manager of volunteer services and pandemic support assistants at Collingwood's hospital says organizations are rebuilding volunteer programs after many services were shut down of the pandemic.

"We need to be more flexible and creative in how volunteers can help us in meaningful impactful work," said Nixon in a news release issued by the volunteer fair organizers. "Community collaboration is key to helping each other to spread the word about volunteer need and interest in the communities we serve."

Matt Bennett, who represents Community Connections, said the fast growth in the region has created a need to support newcomers.

"By volunteering with one of the many organizations serving our community, a person can put their talents and abilities to productive use, make connections with like-minded community members, and help our community become a place that is welcome to all," said Bennett in the news release.

The volunteer fair takes place April 18 at the Collingwood Public Library.
