Please join us in congratulating two of our long-standing volunteers, Sandra Robinson and Karen Schilcher on their 10-year anniversary with the organization! This incredible milestone speaks to their commitment towards our mission to serve the pets and people of Southern Georgian Bay.
Sandra Robinson began her time with us as a Cat Care Volunteer, where her primary duty was to ensure that the cat rooms were clean and tidy. After six months, she transitioned into dog world where she walked dogs and cleaned kennels two full days a week.
She then went onto scheduling volunteers and behaviour testing dogs. In addition to all of the above, Sandra executed our very first animal transport! Our first transport took Sandra to St. Thomas where she picked up and drove six dogs back to GTHS. She has also been involved in animal intakes, events and committees.
Sandra suffers from depression, and when she decided to begin volunteering with us 10 years ago, she was looking for an activity that would get her out of the house.
That, paired with the fact that she wanted to spend time with like-minded individuals and experience the joy that animals always bring her, brought her to applying for a volunteer position with the GTHS.
Sandra truly enjoys the work she does at the GTHS and appreciates that her involvement allows her new experiences and continuous learning. She says she is always “up for anything” and is looking forward to volunteering for another 10 years.
After Karen Schilcher lost her beloved cat, she asked her local veterinarian for advice. She knew that she wanted to help animals in need, so her veterinarian suggested that she get involved with the GTHS.
She did just that! Karen set a goal of swimming 40+ lengths of the pool at the YMCA daily. Her “Swim-athon” raised $900, which she donated to the organization. What an incredible accomplishment!
Following that, she got wind that the GTHS needed a volunteer to look after the accounting for a few weeks in the Fall of 2010. Given her CPA and CMA designations, she knew she was the right fit for the job.
Fast forward to 2011, and Karen, who was now mom to GTHS kitten, Coco, became the Treasurer on the Board of Directors. You may have also had the pleasure of running into Karen when at various GTHS events where she often donates her time.
Recently, she has also been putting her sewing skills to work by fabricating post-surgery onesies to help protect animals after receiving their spay/neuter operations.
Karen’s love for animals is the reason she began volunteering all those years ago. Her dedication over time can be attributed to the positive relationships she has formed with her fellow Board members.
She stated that “It’s a pleasure to be on the board with such professional people who are very focused on the cause, and who are extremely efficient”.
We are extremely grateful to both of these incredible women for their continuous commitment to our organization.
