Next month, area residents will be hiking and biking around Collingwood to show their support for Hospice Georgian Triangle and the many programs offered by the local charity.

The 13th-annual Hike and Bike for Hospice takes place May 28 with a 6-km hiking route and a 20 km biking route along Collingwood trails planned for participants. Registration is open now on the hospice website and participants can start collecting pledges once they've registered.

Hospice Georgian Triangle has a goal of raising $150,000 through the event to support not only Campbell House hospice, but also its other programs such as respite care, pain and symptom management, and grief and bereavement support.

Hospice Georgian Triangle provides end-of-life care for patients at home and at Campbell House in Collingwood serving the communities of the Town of the Blue Mountains, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, and Clearview Township. Their services also include care programs for families, youth, children, and support for caregivers, many of which are run out of the second Hospice Georgian Triangle location on Hurontario Street. All programs are provided at no cost to the patient or their families.

Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation was created in 2012 to raise funds for hospice work. The Ontario government funds a portion of the Hospice operating costs, and the money raised through the foundation covers the rest of the annual operating costs and all of the capital costs.

According to the Hospice Georgian Triangle website, money raised through the charity foundation now covers more than 50 per cent of the annual operating costs for hospice services and 100 per cent of the cost of building Campbell House.

Registration for the hike or bike event is $35, which includes a t-shirt and lunch, both of which are donated by local sponsors.

There will be prizes for the top fundraisers.
