Curling bonspiel an accessible event celebrating barriers broken-down

The annual Breaking Down Barriers Rockin' the House curling bonspiel took place today (March 7) at the Collingwood Curling Club

There were no barriers at the Collingwood Curling Club today for an annual bonspiel event.

This morning and afternoon several teams of curlers threw their rocks at houses for the 14th-annual Breaking Down Barriers Rockin’ the House bonspiel.

Lucille Dalziel, communications and volunteer coordinator for breaking down barriers said this is shaping up to be the most successful spiel yet, with more teams registered, and pledges raised than previous years.

There’s also more than $18,000 in value in the silent auction items.

This is Breaking Down Barriers’ 35th anniversary as a charity, and as such, Dalziel said their goal for today’s event was to raise $35,000.

“Curling is accessible, and this club is accessible,” said Dalziel. “One of the missions of BReaking Down Barriers is integration and sociability. It’s important [for our consumers] to participate in events in the community in which they live. Today there are no barriers, no distinction. Everybody plays as one.”

Breaking Down Barriers is an independent living resource centre serving and advocating for consumers in Bruce, Grey, and Simcoe County.

The curling bonspiel today included participation by 15 Breaking Down Barriers consumers.
