Collingwood Sports Hall of Fame announces 2020 inductees

Though a 2020 in-person ceremony is on hold, the directors of the Hall of Fame still wanted to recognize the sports contributions of this year's inductees

COLLINGWOOD SPORTS HALL OF FAME

The directors of the Collingwood Sports Hall of Fame are pleased to announce the most recent class of inductees into the Collingwood Sports Hall of Fame.  

In the continued bi-annual tradition of receiving public nominations, the selection committee and the board of directors is pleased to announce four new members will enter the Hall of Fame and three teams will be welcomed into the Wall of Fame.  

Hall of Fame - Inductees  

David Christie
Athlete – Alpine Skiing  

  • 1953 Junior Ontario Alpine Champion  
  • 1954 Ontario Championship Senior C Class – 1st Slalom and 3rd Downhill and Alpine Combined  
  • 1956 Founding member of Blue Mountain Ski Club (Collingwood Ski Club) serving as president and executive in subsequent years  

Patty Federer
Builder – Special & Para Olympics (Skiing & Golf) 
 

  • Founder and Head Coach of the Blue Mountain Special Olympics Alpine Team (1997) and Golf Team (2002)  
  • Coached nine provincial and international championship teams during 20+ year coaching career  
  • Lifetime awards include Alpine Ontario, Jozo Weider Award, Ontario Volunteer of the Year, Order of Collingwood, President’s Sports Award, Special Olympics 50th Anniversary (1 of 50 Canadians)  
  • 40+ years - FIS Level 3 Alpine Official 
  • 25 years as a Special Olympics Technical Delegate and Chief of Referees (Local, Regional, National & International), Sport Technical Chair 2008 Provincial Para Winter Games and Alpine Sport Technical Chair at three Provincial Para Winter Games  
  • Only female Jury (TD) alpine official at World Winter Games for the past 23 years

Bill Redick
Builder – Hockey  

  • 1969 - Spearheaded return of Junior hockey to Collingwood known as the Collingwood Blues  
  • Collingwood Blues were 4x League Champion before promotion to Jr. A. Jr. A  Blues captured 1998-99 league championship  
  • 1960s - Longstanding executive of Collingwood Shipbuilders (Senior/Intermediate)  
  • As a successful business owner, The Cooperators is a long time sponsor of  minor baseball and hockey teams  

Fern St. Onge
Builder – Hockey  

  • 30 years coaching/managing Collingwood Hockey Teams (Junior A & C, Senior, Intermediate, Juvenile, Atom/Novice) 
  • Coach – 1973/74 (two teams) - Collingwood Jr. A and Juvenile OMHA  
  • Championship; Manager – 1982/83 Intermediate A OHA League Championship; Co-Coach – 1986/87 OHA Senior A Hockey Championship  
  • Awarded CMHA Coaching Recognition Award – 1999  
  • Responsible for the recruiting of many players to Collingwood for intermediate and senior teams 

Wall of Fame - Teams 

1968-69 Collingwood Bantam Legionnaires Hockey Team  

  • 1969 OMHA and Silver Stick Champions (Bantam AA), Georgian Bay Champions  
  • Season Record 72-1-1  

2006 Smokum Too Yacht Racing Team  

  • First and only Canadian boat to win the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy. Awarded to the first overall mono-hull boat competing in this annual 536 km race starting in Lake Michigan off Chicago ending in Mackinac Island on Lake Huron. Every year since 1898 with rare exception, the race features 300+ boats and 3,000 sailors. It is recognized as the oldest freshwater race.

2014-15 Collingwood Blackhawks Atom A Hockey Team  

  • 2015 - OMHA & Silver Stick International - AE Champions  
  • Season Record 51-9-3  

This event marks the 46th year since the Hall’s inception when its founder Scotty Carmichael introduced the inaugural members that have grown to number 160 sporting personalities and 39 teams.  

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the Hall of Fame is unable to host our traditional ceremony featuring a guest speaker and induction presentations. At this time, this event will be scheduled for a later time to allow the town to come together and celebrate the sporting accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Further information will be released when a date and location are confirmed.
