The organizer behind the Collingwood Terry Fox Run is hoping this year's event will be a record-breaker in at least two ways.
Sarah Applegarth said the goal for the Sept. 17 event is to reach $36,900 in donations, which is the highest-ever for Collingwood and was achieved in 2019. She also wants to see at least 486 participants, also the local record, which was set in 2018.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual charity event that supports the Terry Fox Foundation in memory of the famous Canadian who set out to run coast-to-coast following a cancer diagnosis that took his leg. Fox died before he could finish the run, but his efforts and story have inspired millions of others to raise money, run, and donate toward cancer research. That includes Collingwood residents, who helped raise $26,789 at the 2022 event.
“It is a wonderful community event that really embodies the spirit of Terry Fox and his dream of raising both awareness and money for cancer research," said Applegarth. "We have all been affected by this disease and need to keep pushing research forward.”
The Collingwood event takes place at Harbourview Park where participants can run, walk, jog, or stroll a 10-kilometre route.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a keynote speaker and group warm-up at 9:45 a.m. The run/walk starts at 10 a.m. Donations will be accepted by cash or cheque on-site as well as by credit card in advance on the website.
This year's Terry Fox T-shirt design was made in collaboration with actor Ryan Reynolds and it features messages written to Terry and his family in the past and present to celebrate how Fox's legacy still inspires people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities in Canada and beyond.
