Fashion is fabulous. It’s also the number two most polluting industry on earth, second only to the oil industry.

Fast fashion is a trend that’s motivated by the production of quantity over quality. It has doubled worldwide clothing production in about 10 years. The clothes we wear impact our air, our water, our planet and our people. How do you make conscious and ethical choices when it comes to clothing? The impact we have is enormous.

The True Cost airs at Collingwood’s Simcoe Street Theatre at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16. This latest film in the Be The Change film series explores the fashion industry, from Bangladesh to Milan, and answers the question: who pays the price for our clothing?

We all know that exponential growth and use of finite resources is not sustainable. Yet consumer consumption trends support a fashion industry that engages in careless production practices involving toxic and non-biodegradable materials that are destroying our ecosystems. Unregulated manufacturing practices also have serious negative impacts on the health and safety of the workers, who are predominantly women.
