29 new COVID cases for Collingwood, Clearview, Wasaga since Friday

The health unit is reporting 226 new cases for the region in its first update since Jan. 8

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 226 new cases of COVID-19 in the region since Friday.

The health unit has also confirmed two deaths of Simcoe County residents, one individual was from Bradford, and one from Penetanguishene.

The individuals whose deaths were reported today include a woman over the age of 80 who died on Jan. 8 and whose case was linked to the outbreak at Georgian Bay General Hospital. 

The second death was a man between 65 and 79 who died on Jan. 6, and whose case was linked to an outbreak outside of the region. 

Included on the health unit's Jan. 11 list of new COVID-19 cases, are 68 Barrie residents, 11 Collingwood resident, three Clearview resident, 15 Wasaga Beach residents, 44 Bradford West Gwillimbury residents, 11 Innisfil residents, four Midland residents, and five Orillia residents. 

The health unit has also declared COVID outbreaks (all of which are still ongoing) at the following facilities: 

  • Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland, outbreak declared Dec. 4
  • Trillium Manor, Orillia, Dec. 14
  • Revera Sara Vista, Elmvale, Dec. 25
  • Lakeside Retirement, Innisfil, Dec. 26 
  • Unnamed child care centre, Wasaga Beach, Dec. 27 
  • Georgian Manor, Penetanguishene, Dec. 27
  • Woods Park Care Centre Retirement Home, Barrie, Jan. 1
  • Villa Retirement Lodge, Midland, Jan 2
  • Simcoe Manor, Tosorontio Unit, Beeton, Jan. 3
  • Grove Park Home (Aspen), Barrie, Jan. 4
  • The Pines Long Term Care Residence (Cedar), Bracebridge, Jan. 5

The provincial government requires an outbreak be declared at a retirement or long-term care home where one staff or resident tests positive. There does not have to be evidence of spread within the home for an outbreak to be declared. In most other cases, the health unit does not declare an outbreak unless there is evidence of transmission at the facility. 

The breakdown of cases provided by the health unit is as follows. All case transmissions are under investigation unless otherwise indicated: 

  • Collingwood (11): Seven women and one man between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and a man and a woman between 45 and 64.  
  • Wasaga Beach (15):A man between 18 and 34 years old, four women and four men between 45 and 64 years old, two women and three men between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one to a workplace outbreak out of the region. 
  • Clearview (3): A man between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old and a woman between 65 and 79 years old.  
  • Barrie (68): Two girls and five boys under 18, five women and seven men between 18 and 34 years old, four women and a man between 35 and 44 years old, four women and five men between 45 and 64 years old, give women and three men between 65 and 79 years old, and 27 people over the age of 80. There are 31 cases linked to institutional outbreaks (including 25 individuals over 80), three cases are attributed to community transmission, and eight are linked to close contact. 
  • Springwater (2): A man between 35 and 44 and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Innisfil (11): A boy under 18, three men between 18 and 34 years old, two men between 35 and 44 years old, two women and two men between 45 and 64 years old and a man between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one to an institutional outbreak. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (44): Three girls and five boys under 18, five women and 10 men between 18 and 34 years old, four women and three men between 35 and 44 years old, six women and five men between 45 and 64 years old, two men between 65 and 79 years old, and a man over 80. Seven cases are linked to close contact, four are community-acquired and two are linked to outbreaks out of the region. 
  • Orillia (5): A man between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, two men between 45 and 64 years old and a man over 80 whose case is linked to an institutional outbreak. 
  • Oro-Medonte (5): A boy under 18, a woman between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old, and two women between 65 and 79 years old.Two cases are linked to congregate setting outbreaks and one to an institutional outbreak. 
  • Midland (4): A woman under 18, a man between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old, and a man between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (5): A girl under 17, a woman and a man between 35 and 44 years old, a man between 65 and 79 years old and a woman over 80. The girl's case is linked to close contact. 
  • Tay (2): A woman between 18 and 34 and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Tiny (3): Three people between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Essa (3): A woman between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and a woman between 45 and 64 years old, 
  • Severn (3): Two women and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission. 
  • New Tecumseth (25): Two girls and four boys under 18, two women and four men between 18 and 34 years old, two women and three men between 35 and 44 years old, a woman and three men between 45 and 64 years old, two women and two men between 65 and 79 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact, and one to community transmission. 
  • Adjala Tosorontio (5): A boy under 18, A man between 35 and 44 years old, and a woman and two men between 45 and 64 years old. The boy's case is linked to close contact. 
  • In Muskoka, there are two new cases in Huntsville, and two in Gravenhurst. 
  • There are 8 cases listed with location information still pending. 

The local health unit has now confirmed 4,309 cases of COVID-19 with 2,942 of those cases recovered and 73 cases ending in death. There are more than 1,200 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.

There are at least 35 people from Simcoe County hospitalized. There is one person hospitalized with COVID-19 at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. 

According to the health unit, there have been more than 7,900 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administered in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on Jan. 11.
