Among the most popular stories of 2023 was this headline posted on May 25: Police confirm human bones found in woods off Highway 26.

Land surveyors in the area located human bones and reported them to police at about 3:30 p.m. on May 24. Police were combing a wooded area off Highway 26 between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach for a couple of days.

The police search of the area involved K9 cadaver dogs and a forensic anthropologist.

There were no more details from police until Aug. 23, when OPP confirmed the bones belonged to a person who had been missing since July, 2020.

Police would not confirm the name of the missing person out of respect for the family's privacy, but said foul play is not suspected.
