LETTER: Arts centre would come with parking solution

Parking shouldn't be a reason to push a future arts centre out of the downtown, writes Collingwood resident

CollingwoodToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via our website. Please include your daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in response to a previous letter suggesting there isn't enough parking or room for an arts centre and theatre in downtown Collingwood.

I would like to respond to the letter from Leslie McKay regarding parking for a centre for arts, culture and entertainment in downtown Collingwood.

First of all, the Collingwood Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) in Collingwood supports the centre in the downtown core of Collingwood.

A centre, with a larger theatre, will bring in millions of dollars in revenue to our downtown businesses.

Regarding parking, the Collingwood Art Culture Entertainment (CACE) Group, which has been meeting for four years to stimulate the building of an arts centre, has recommended that an underground parking structure be completed, especially with the parking lot at 140 St. Marie, to the south of the Eddie Bush Arena.

The street level parking would also be maintained so that the parking would be doubled for the Town of Collingwood with a centre on this site.

Bottom line, the consultant, the community and CACE are very aware of the parking challenges in Collingwood, and I believe that any centre will have enhanced parking for the downtown core.
