The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has declared COVID-19 outbreaks at two Barrie long-term care facilities, however there have not been any outbreaks reported at Collingwood facilities.

There have been a total of eight cases confirmed in Collingwood, but the health unit is now reporting that total at seven. Dr. Charles Gardner, Simcoe Muskoka medical officer of health, said they have had six cases move out of the region and so have taken those cases out of the total. It's possible one of those cases was a Collingwood resident.

Of the remaining seven cases, six people have recovered.

There have been seven cases reported in Wasaga Beach, though the health unit is only listing six cases now. Three people have recovered and one man has died.

There were also two cases confirmed in Clearview Township, both have since recovered.

Ontario announced 510 new COVID-19 cases in the province. Since the pandemic began, there have been 12,245 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported, including 6,221 (50.8 per cent) recoveries and 659 deaths (5.4 per cent).

Free Spirit Gardens and other local groups have joined a province-wide effort to petition the government to include community gardens on the list of essential services. Some argue the gardens are essential for food security.

Collingwood Mayor Brian Saunderson is asking the county to get clarification from the province on whether or not municipalities can provide loans to businesses. The idea was proposed as part of a COVID-19 economic recovery package to Collingwood council earlier this month.

Today's essential workers of the day are home care providers.

CollingwoodToday would like your help in recognizing local essential workers from health care workers, physicians, cashiers and delivery drivers. If you'd like to say thanks to someone you know, please send a photo, their name, their job title, and your words of thanks to [email protected]. Please only send photos and information with permission.
