Ontario reported an additional 485 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 this morning, bringing the cumulative total to 10,010, which includes 514 deaths (5.1 per cent) and 4,875 recoveries (48.7 per cent).

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed a new COVID-19 case in Collingwood and two in Wasaga Beach.

This marked the eighth confirmed case in a Collingwood resident. Four have now recovered and the rest are self-isolating.

The health unit does not typically provide case updates on the weekends, so the website still lists 185 total cases for the region (reported yesterday), including 82 recoveries and 12 deaths.

Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the Simcoe Muskoka region reported yesterday there are 10 confirmed COVID-19 cases currently hospitalized including four at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, four at Southlake Regional Health Centre, and one at Stevenson Memorial Hospital. The other hospitalized case is “under investigation.”

Gardner said he sees a flattening of the curve in the region and calculated the doubling rate of the virus in the region (that is the amount of time it takes for the total number of cases to double) has increased from 7.2 days a week ago to 14.3 days now.

Though he cautioned a surge could still be coming and noted the health unit and area hospitals are preparing for that possibility.

A Collingwood resident celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday with no hugs but lots of love from his family, who brought balloons, signs and a piper to his home at Balmoral Village to mark the occasion from two metres or more away - as is the style in pandemic times.

Collingwood’s markets and independent grocers are seeing a sharp increase in customers who are looking for online and phone-in order options as well as curb pickup and delivery. If you’re finding yourself in need of some groceries, here’s where you can learn more about local stores and markets.

Today’s essential workers of the day are Brenda Truax and Wendy Dowling. CollingwoodToday would like your help in recognizing local essential workers from health care workers, to physicians, cashiers and delivery drivers.
