The future of the Grey Gables long-term care home upgrade project remains in limbo.
At Grey County council’s meeting on Sept. 8, county staff presented a 10-year capital funding forecast and the Grey Gables upgrade project in Markdale was not included on the list.
In August 2021, county council put the project on hold after estimated costs came in significantly higher than expected.
The Ministry of Long-Term Care approved 62 new beds for Grey Gables to be added to the 66 existing beds to make the home a 128-bed facility.
During the discussion about the capital forecast, Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen immediately asked about the project.
“Grey Gables was put on hold for a period of time. There is no note or mention of that one (in the plan). It wasn’t cancelled, it was put on hold,” said McQueen, who suggested a major capital project that hasn’t been cancelled should factor into the forecast somewhere. “I don’t know where that falls into a 10-year capital plan.”
County CAO Kim Wingrove said the project remains on hold and that decision has not been reversed by county council.
“There is nothing in the 10-year capital plan at this time for the redevelopment at Grey Gables,” said Wingrove.
At the time the project was shelved by council, there were also concerns about the county having two major long-term care home redevelopment projects happening at the same time. The county is also redeveloping Rockwood Terrace home in Durham over the next several years.
