Beaver Valley Outreach wraps up 40th anniversary celebrations

Beaver Valley Outreach is putting away a time capsule that won't be opened until its 50th anniversary

Beaver Valley Outreach (BVO) has wrapped up a year-long celebration of its 40th anniversary.

BVO held a special event in Thornbury on Dec. 15, to lower the 40th anniversary flag. The flag was raised earlier this year at BVO’s kick-off to celebrate 40 years.

BVO has created a special time capsule that will be filled with items from the past year, including the flag, and set away for the next 10 years. It will be opened in time for the 50th anniversary.

The Blue Mountains Mayor Andrea Matrosovs brought words of gratitude to the event and presented BVO with a special commemorative town scroll to be placed in the time capsule.

“Beaver Valley Outreach has contributed to the social sustainability of our community,” said Matrosovs, who thanked the entire team at the organization for their efforts to support the community.

Thornbury Clarksburg Rotary Club members Gerry McGregor and Lib Kennedy made special presentations at the event. They presented Carolyn Letourneau, BVO executive director, and director Norine Baron with Paul Harris Fellowships from The Rotary Foundation.

“I am speechless,” Letourneau said after the surprise presentation. “I’m very, very honoured to stand beside Norine and receive a humbling award. BVO has had a great partnership with Rotary over the years.”

Baron, who has been with BVO since the beginning, recalled that they were busy four decades ago.

“It was this time of month we launched our first event 40 years ago,” she said, recalling the launch of BVO’s Christmas hamper program. “It wasn’t a nice day like this.”

Jennifer Armstrong of Simcoe-Grey MP Terry Dowdell’s office also attended the event. MP Dowdell was in Ottawa in the House of Commons.

“Thank you for your dedication, vision and caring,” said Armstrong.
