An automated licence plate reader allowed authorities to catch up with a driver who had evaded police Wednesday in Grey County.

At about 11:30 a.m., a Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP officer clocked a vehicle being driven at 129 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Grey Road 119 near Grey Road 2. The driver failed to stop for police and continued at a high rate of speed. The officer called off the pursuit out of concerns for public safety.

“What the driver did not know is our new automatic licence plate reader recorded the licence plate on the car and (a) forward-facing in-car camera recorded video of the driver behind the wheel at the time of the offence as they were driving by,” police said in a news release.

Officers later showed up at the driver’s home and laid charges.

The driver, a 24-year-old from Owen Sound, has been charged with careless driving, flight from a police officer, stunt driving (excessive speed), and being a G1 driver unaccompanied by a qualified driver. The accused will appear in court in Owen Sound at a later date.
