A 20-year-old Markham man faces stunt driving and impaired driving charges after a driver was captured on radar at 200 km/h on Highway 401, Ontario Provincial Police said.
A video posted on X by the OPP Highway Safety Division shows a vehicle continuing to drive in the passing lane of the highway, despite the police vehicle with its rotating lights on driving beside it.
“The driver apparently was unaware of other vehicle presences, and even with (police) lights shining on the vehicle, it continued with incredibly high rates of speed through traffic,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
“You see the officer changing lanes just to get around other traffic before pulling up to stop and as the vehicle stopped, there were other units there to assist.”
The driver was charged with dangerous driving, stunt driving, and impaired driving (blood alcohol concentration 80 plus) after being stopped by Mississauga OPP on Highway 401 and Erin Mills on March 26 at 2 a.m., police said.
“In the middle of the night, it doesn’t matter,” said Schmidt. “That is high-risk behaviour and one of the leading causes of death for drunk driving.”
The driver received a 90-day license suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
