Domestic disputes, dogs in cars and many other things police attended to this weekend

Police responded to 155 calls for service over the long weekend

Officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to 155 calls for service over the long weekend including:

Four domestic disputes, one incident resulting an assault charge being laid and in another a party had to be taken into custody to prevent further issues at the residence. In some cases officers provide the caller with some legal advice related to the breakdown of a relationship or where to turn to for assistance from services available in our community.

Two calls for service for dogs left in cars, in one incident the owner returned to his vehicle where police gave him advice on being a responsible dog owner, the dog did not suffer any lasting effects. In the other incident the vehicle left prior to police arrival.

Two calls for service for Liquor Licence Act (LLA) infractions, one resulting in a male being arrested and charged after being called for an intoxicated party in the area of Hurontario Street and First Street. He was held in custody until sober and later charged under the Liquor Licence Act (LLA) for being Intoxicated in a Public Place.

23 calls for 911 accidental dials, in some cases the officers could not locate the caller but conducted patrols of the area where the phone was last detected. In the majority of the cases the caller is found, no emergency, attributed most likely what is commonly referred to a 'pocket dial'

16 motor vehicle collisions, no reports of serious injuries. One incident involved a vehicle that collided with a building on Arthur Street West at Victoria Street in Thornbury, does not appear there were any injuries and no word on the extent of the damage to the building or charges. The majority of the collisions resulted in property damage only and in some instances charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act.

Nine noise complaints related to noisy neighbours/parties.

Eight false alarm calls due to malfunctions, user error via the activation or de-activation of the alarm system or insecure doors.

Officers also conducted numerous RIDE initiatives resulting in many motorists being stopped, two Provincial Offences Notices were issued however no charges related to impaired driving. 

Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP Marine Unit members were also out on the waters of Georgian Bay ensuring that everyone was safe, sober and had all the required safety equipment. Many vessels were stopped to check on the above and in some instances charges were laid under the Canada Shipping Act (CSA). These marine patrols, which have been occurring throughout the summer, are being done to save lives and reduce injuries on our waterways and spread the knowledge of safe boating practices.

Officers are also looking for the public's assistance in solving a mischief to a piano which took place sometime overnight from August 3 to August 4 on in the area of the Collingwood Town Hall on Hurontario Street. The piano was part of the Keys to Collingwood Street Piano Festival and was damaged after suspect(s) broke into the piano.

Officers also dealt with report of a stolen Kona mountain bike, was apparently locked on Schoolhouse Lane in Collingwood and was stolen sometime on August 6 2018 between 4:00pm and midnight. Bike is described as black in colour with blue graphics and has white front shocks.

Officers are also looking to identify a male who shoplifted a DeWalt chainsaw at a local hardware store. The theft took place on August 4 2018 at approximately 4 p.m. where the male walked out of the store with a brand new chainsaw and was last seen leaving in a black coloured Dodge Caravan. A photo of the male from the video surveillance is attached to this media release. Anyone with information on the identity of the male in the photo is asked to contact Constable Coleman Blake at the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP at 705 445 4321.

Four unwanted persons calls, one in which a male was arrested and charged with Causing a Disturbance and Failing to Comply with his Probation Order after he refused to leave a restaurant in Thornbury on Sunday night. He was transported to Collingwood detachment and later released with a court date at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.

The remaining calls for service included traffic complaints, police assistance/advice on various situations requiring advice on legal matters, lost wallets and suspicious vehicles/persons.

Officers as well conducted foot patrols downtown and continued to conducted vehicular patrols on area roadways to ensure everyone had a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
