Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has recently become aware of a group using the SIU’s toll-free number to make fraudulent calls. The call appears to be coming from 1-800-787-8529 (SIU).

In some cases, the person is told that there is something wrong with his or her social insurance number, and that if you don’t continue with the call by pressing ‘1’ or ‘2’, the person will be charged or jailed.

Please be aware that the SIU does not contact individuals by phone for this type of personal information. If you receive a call such as this, please report it to:

  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
