In some cases, the person is told that there is something wrong with his or her social insurance number, and that if you don’t continue with the call by pressing ‘1’ or ‘2’, the person will be charged or jailed.

Please be aware that the SIU does not contact individuals by phone for this type of personal information. If you receive a call such as this, please report it to:

If you have witnessed or you possess information regarding a SIU case, please continue to contact us at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
