A boat ran into trouble in the Collingwood harbour on July 29 which led to three offence notices for the vessel owner.

According to OPP Const. Trevor McKean, the boat ran into difficulty Saturday night.

“Collingwood Fire, OPP and the Coast Guard were activated. They were towed back in to the Collingwood harbour,” said McKean.

McKean said there were six people on the vessel, but not enough personal flotation devices (PFD) on board for all six.

“The operator of the vessel was issued with three offence notices under the small vessel regulations of the Canada Shipping Act... for not having enough safety equipment on-board,” said McKean.

Earlier this week, OPP put out a news release reminding everyone to always wear a personal flotation device when enjoying the waterways.

"A life jacket stored somewhere on a boat will not help you if you somehow fall into the water or get knocked out of your boat.," said Sgt. Dave Moffatt in the release. "Safety is paramount when it comes to recreational activities on the water and the proper wearing of a PFD at all times will enhance surviving an unfortunate incident that may occur."

In 2023, 11 lives have been lost on OPP-patrolled waterways. Over the past 13 years, 300 lives have been lost on OPP-patrolled waterways, with 256 (88 per cent) of the incidents involving the individual not wearing a PFD.
