Doug Smith, 86, of Clarksburg, Ontario, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2023 at Meaford General Hospital.

Born in Toronto, Ontario on December 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Kenneth Manning and Ethel Irene (nee Muir) Smith.

Doug always enjoyed being in the Georgian Bay region.  Inevitably, he and his wife moved to Clarksburg in 1996.

Doug is survived by his best friend and wife of 61 years, Doris Elizabeth (nee Whittle); proud and loving sons Robert (Virginia) of Stouffville and Christopher of Waterloo.  He will be fondly remembered by his grandson Jadon Smith of Stouffville.

Formerly of Toronto, Richmond Hill and Waterloo, Doug was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Jr. and two sisters, Jean Bakkenes (Richard) and Barbara Paris (Gerald).  He will be missed by many nieces and nephews along with the numerous friends he made along the way.

Doug will be remembered as a gentle soul.  He didn’t like to be idle; Doug was determined to be an active individual. He exercised regularly and enjoyed biking with local club well into his later years, loved playing baseball and even learned to sail.  Doug set goals for himself and ran in numerous marathons in his lifetime.  An avid ‘Do It Yourself-er’ he was never afraid to tackle new projects in and around the home.  Doug always looked forward to reading the latest National Geographic as he always wanted to learn new things.  He was a member of the Collingwood Probus Club. Doug worked most of his life in insurance, the majority of it with Prudential Assurance.  He was a proud founding member of Alpine Ski Club, and was a passionate and dedicated ski instructor for over 40 years.

Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be conducted at Thornbury-Clarksburg Union Cemetery.  A celebration of Doug’s life will take place at a later date.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Parkinson Society would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca
