It is with heavy hearts the Meekings family announce Dorothy’s sudden passing at the Georgian Bay General Hospital on Saturday December 23rd, 2023, at the age of 87.

Dorothy, of Tiny Township, was the beloved wife of John E. Meekings for over 66 years. Loving mother of John Jr. (Sandy) and David (Patricia). Cherished Nana of Kannen, Leara, Jonah, Alexzander, and Devyn. Treasured Great-Nana of Lillian. Beloved Aunt of Peter (Marion), and great Aunt of Holly and Joseph. Dorothy was loved and will be missed by our extended family member John B (Bouke).

Predeceased by her Mother Hannah (Isherwood), Father Richard, brothers David, Leslie, Reginald, and sister Enid. Loved and missed dearly by her sister Margaret. Lovingly remembered by her many friends.

Dorothy was born in London, England on October 17th, 1936, to her loving parents Richard and Hannah Harris. Dorothy enjoyed a busy family life with 4 older and 1 younger sibling. Between the ages of 3 – 9 yrs old the family endured the World War II Bombings in London. If asked, Dorothy would share many stories of her experiences as a child. Dorothy's teenage years were marked by two major events: at the age of 17yrs, the family tragically lost their dad. Followed by the introduction of her long-time love and husband of 66+ years to the family, John Edward Meekings.

After a budding courtship, Dorothy and John tied the knot on October 19th, 1957; followed 3 weeks later by 2 years of National Service in the British Armed Forces for John. A major life event took place in November 1965 when John and Dorothy immigrated to Canada. Closely followed by the birth of their son John in 1967, and their youngest son David in 1970.

Dorothy worked for many years as a medical secretary and loved gardening. She was a long-time choir member at Trinity United Church in Newmarket, and Manager of the Newmarket Men's Coaches Soccer club. She loved organizing social events which included many great parties over her 87 years of life.

Dorothy loved travelling, especially to Florida and England. She was an avid reader, as the many totes full of books can attest to. She also loved the Royal Family and had quite a collection of all things related to them in her beautiful Curio cabinet, which she treasured.

Dorothy set the example of what a mum should be and loved her family fiercely, and with devotion. It showed in everything she did.

Friends are invited to join the family at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home, 509 River Road West for visitation on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 4 p.m. The service in the chapel will begin at 5 p.m. If desired, donations in memory of Dorothy to the Ontario Lung Association, SickKids Foundation, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.  To sign her Book of Memories, please visit www.carruthersdavidson.com
