It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear husband, father and grandfather, brother and friend on Sunday August 29, 2021, in his 63rd year. Don will be forever loved and deeply missed by his wife Sue, children Mandy and Tyler (Shannon) and grandchildren Jack, Sophie and Evelyn. Don was born in Barrie to parents the late Franklin and Jean Hickling, he is survived by his brother Lloyd (Linda); predeceased by brother Norman. He will be remembered by his sisters-in-law Mary (Robin) Jeffery and Anne (Raymond) Clinkard as well as many nieces and nephews.
Whether playing or watching, Don loved sports, especially baseball.  He made sure his kids loved it just as much as him.  His grandkids are now carrying on the tradition. Don was fondly called ‘Big’ by his baseball team; not because of his size, but because of the size of his heart. He would do anything for anyone, even if it meant he had to do without.  He was larger than life with a laugh that came straight from his soul; a laugh that could be heard echoing around the euchre table.
Chrome was Don’s favourite colour. He never bought a truck that he didn’t deck out.

Don was a born entrepreneur.  He started his first company in his late teens. He was never afraid of hard work. He showed us all that you could move mountains if you believed enough and worked hard enough.  As the owner of Roadrunner Foods, Don employed countless individuals.  He taught by example, instilling his strong character and work ethic, always leading with kindness.  Don was a great man to not only work for but to do business with as he treated all with respect. His handshake was worth more than a piece of paper.

Above all, family always came first.  You never questioned that you were loved.

You’re Ok, Honey.
I’m Ok.
You’re Ok.  I’m Here.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lane and his team, Jen Brewer and Alisa from Saint Elizabeth Healthcare for their years of care. Don was lucky to have such incredible advocates. We would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Campbell House who wrapped their arms around Don, taking such good care of him in his final days.  As per his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date; details to follow. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to Hospice Georgian Triangle (Campbell House) or a charity of your choice in Don’s memory.
