Reapprehended prisoner who escaped custody makes court appearance

A recaptured prisoner who allegedly escaped custody after getting out of his restraints and dashing for freedom appeared in La Ronge provincial court Jan. 30 via CCTV.

Fifteen traffic tickets against John Riley Sanderson, 32, were withdrawn by the Crown.

Sanderson remains in custody, however, on other charges.

According to La Ronge RCMP, Sanderson was being escorted from the court house to a transport vehicle around noon on Jan. 2 when he broke free from his restraints and ran from the officers.

He was recaptured on Jan. 22 after police responded to a report of an impaired driver. RCMP officers discovered the vehicle in a ditch along Hwy 915, south of Stanley Mission. The driver was identified as John Riley Sanderson and he was arrested without incident for impaired driving and outstanding warrants.

Sanderson has a bail hearing scheduled in La Ronge provincial court on Feb. 3.
