YMCA hosting free outdoor programming for kids on Family Day weekend

Kids ages four to 12 invited to take part in new Escape in the Landscape program
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is offering its Escape in the Landscape program on Family Day weekend.

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka invites families with children ages four to 12 to try their new Escape in the Landscape program at no cost this Family Day weekend, Feb. 17 to 19.

Escape in the Landscape is an eight-week program designed to immerse children in nature through inquiry-based and experiential learning activities, and those who attend this free Family Day showcase session will be the first to experience it. The program aims to spark curiosity and creativity, build confidence and social skills, and give children the opportunity to make lasting memories and foster a love for the great outdoors.

Dates, times, and locations for this free showcase are as follows:

  • Innisfil YMCA — Saturday, Feb. 17, 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Midland YMCA — Sunday, Feb. 18, 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Wasaga Beach YMCA — Monday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children who try out this new program will have the opportunity to engage all five senses in play, exploring outdoor elements while improving their overall mental and physical health.

There are also opportunities at the Family Day showcase to sign up for the full, eight-week Escape in the Landscape program, which starts in early March. There are just a few spots remaining.

“We recognize that children learn best through play, and this opportunity to try Escape in the Landscape for free is one way we can provide them with enriching, memorable experiences,” says Jill Tettmann, CEO, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. “As we navigate a world that is becoming increasingly detached from nature, and one where children don’t often have the chance to slow down and appreciate the environment around them, this program serves as a vital way to foster a love of nature and the outdoors, and start to instil environmental stewardship in the next generation.”
